What Is a domain? Definition & Guide

A domain is the name-address of a website, like carbonstealth.eu, that users type into the browser to reach it. It is the equivalent of a home address, but on the internet.

How a domain works

A domain is made of a name (carbonstealth) and an extension, or TLD (.eu, .com, .it). When someone types it, the DNS translates the name into the IP address of the hosting server and loads the site. A domain is registered with a registrar and must be renewed each year to keep ownership.

How to choose a good domain

Domain, hosting and security

The domain is separate from hosting: you can keep them with the same provider or two different ones. Every domain needs an SSL certificate for HTTPS. In our web development service we handle registration, DNS and SSL, so you start with no technical worries.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a domain cost?
A domain costs on average €10-15 per year, depending on the extension. Some special TLDs or highly sought-after names can cost more.
Is the domain mine forever?
No: a domain is "rented" with an annual renewal. As long as you renew it, it stays yours; if it expires, after a grace period it becomes available to others.
Can I move a domain to another host?
Yes. The domain is independent of hosting: you just update the DNS records to point it to a new server, without changing the name.
